Transport infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, is crucial for the functioning and economic development of society. However, these structures face significant stress from extreme climatic conditions, which can lead to severe damage and disruptions in the transportation network. To ensure the safety and reliability of these infrastructures, continuous monitoring of their structural health is essential.
Our project, Extreme-G, aims to develop an innovative solution for monitoring transport infrastructure under extreme climatic conditions using satellite data and 5G technology. By integrating satellite data with traditional sensors, we offer a comprehensive and cost-effective method for detecting and managing risks in real-time.
A central component of our project is the use of a structural digital twin, a virtual model of the infrastructure that is continuously updated with data from both satellites and ground-based sensors. This digital twin allows for the simulation and analysis of the infrastructure under various loading scenarios, providing valuable insights for preventing damage and optimizing maintenance.
By utilizing satellite data, we can monitor infrastructures in remote and hard-to-reach areas where it is impractical to install and maintain traditional sensors. Additionally, 5G technology enables fast and secure data transmission, which is crucial for immediate response during extreme events.
The project is expected to lead to several important results and effects:
- Improved Customer Engagement and Value Proposition: By understanding the operational needs and constraints of our customers, we can tailor our offerings to better meet their requirements.
- Technical Feasibility Assessment: A thorough evaluation of the technical feasibility of integrating sate lite data into our existing SHM services.
- Commercial Viability: An assessment of the commercial potential of our solution, including market readiness, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
- Proof of Concept: Demonstration of our solution through a Proof of Concept, validating our approach and providing insights for further development.
By combining advanced technology with innovative methods, we strive to create a more sustainable and resilient transport infrastructure. Our project contributes to reducing the risk of structural failures, improving safety, and lowering maintenance costs, ultimately benefiting both society and the environment.
